Kazu brings a lifetime of working experience to his photography. This Tokyo-born son of an ice-block merchant arrived in the United States in 1969, studying at the Art Center of Design. After a commercial apprenticeship among the "20-foot mirrors" of Detroit's auto industry, Kazu settled in Chicago to build both a career and an aesthetic.

Kazu uncovers gentle emotional resonance in simple subjects through a thoughtful approach to crafting images. His speciality is modulating the interplay of surface texture and shadow through detailed lighting technique. His precise use of gels and filtration fuses classic monochrome modelling with the quiet delight of well-chosen color.

Kazu prefers to serve as a collaborator, creatively employing his thirty years of photographic exploration and studio technique in service of the designer's concept. He will explore ideas with you, translating vision into image in a pratical yet playful way.

While focused on small-subject studio work, Kazu is adept at portraiture and landscapes as well. His Lincoln Park studio is both home and workspace.
