Do you know:
Imaging specialists and other photographers visualize people's dreams in a tangible way. Every photographer's goal should be to bring each frame of film to its fullest and best use. But don't kid yourself. A good photograph, a worthy image, does not just happen! Capturing the ultimate photo and producing the right print is not automatic. It is not accidental. It is not easy. The creative process is ever-growing, trying, and elusive. Yes indeed! Mastering the process requires education, perseverence, and a sense of timing.Still, imagine moving your craft to the point that you arrest truth long enough to capture it with your lens, lay it upon film, (or store it in a digital format,) then deliver it to an audience that is satisfied only by your work! This is indeed a success, and it can lead to one success after another.
There are many keys to the creative process. Those who have found a set (or even just one key) offer their clients a chance to see themselves as they indeed wish to be seen. Experience is such a key. It is essential that you build a rich base of experience in order to unfold the creative process. Work through creative exercises. Keep your notes and film from the exercises. It is great for a future review. By developing good creative practices, you can better focus your energy. That in turn, produces better and better results, more and more frequently. As your confidence develops, it moves you through every step. To some, confidence comes naturally. To others, it is a learned experience. No matter how you get there, mastering the full process is a lifetime happening. Experienced image specialists know what equipment to carry: their list includes monopods, ladders, Polaroid backs, reflectors, silks, custom filters for the camera, custom filters for the lights, and (most especially) special aids, such as props that enhance the scene. But equipment and practice are only part of the creative process. Learn to look and see! Learn to listen and to hear. Learn to look from different points of view! When you carry a camera in the name of truth you carry the dreams of someone who has put you in charge of moments that, by and large, will be lived only once. You have a heavy responsibility to deliver perfection time and time again ... and to do it with style. In future articles we will expand on the issues outlined here to help you develop new creative habits that will enhance your craft and your product. The articles will include short cuts and tips on developing new habits to aid you in your quest of being the best! In signing off, I will say I have never retreated from what I thought was the best that could be delivered. I encourage you to advance to a point of total truth: truth in the image and truth in the image delivered. Life is one of those good four-letter words. To capture the moments of life is a good thing. To do it perfectly is a great thing. Your rewards will be great. Good Luck!
